IEBC Sets May 14 By-Elections for Emurua Dikirr MP Seat and Two County Assembly Wards

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that by-elections to fill three vacant elective seats across the country will be held on May 14, 2026.

According to the electoral body, the by-elections will cover the Member of Parliament seat for Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, as well as two county assembly ward seats in Samburu and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.

The Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of area MP Johana Ng’eno, prompting the IEBC to initiate the process of conducting a by-election to allow residents to elect a new representative.

In addition to the parliamentary contest, voters in Porro Ward in Samburu County and Endo Ward in Elgeyo-Marakwet County will also head to the polls to elect new Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to fill the vacant positions.

IEBC has outlined a detailed electoral timeline to guide the process. Political parties and independent candidates have been directed to submit the names and symbols of their candidates by March 25, 2026.

For those seeking to contest as independent candidates, the commission stated that they must not have been affiliated with any political party for at least three months prior to the election date, in line with electoral regulations.

The commission further announced that candidate nominations will take place on April 15 and April 16, after which campaigns will officially begin. Campaign activities are expected to run from April 15 until May 11, giving candidates nearly a month to engage voters.

Meanwhile, IEBC has indicated that updates to the voter register in the affected electoral areas will remain suspended until June 12, as the commission prepares and manages the by-election process.

The upcoming by-elections are expected to attract significant political interest, particularly in Emurua Dikirr, where political parties are likely to field strong candidates in a contest that could reshape the local political landscape.

The electoral body has assured voters that it is putting in place the necessary logistical and administrative arrangements to ensure the polls are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
