Russia Rules Out Repatriation of Kenyans Allegedly Serving in Its Military

The Russian government has stated that there will be no repatriation of Kenyans allegedly serving in its military, citing lack of formal agreements between the two nations.

This position was confirmed following discussions between Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the statement, both Kenya and Russia clarified that they were not involved in any contractual arrangements concerning the recruitment or deployment of Kenyan nationals into the Russian military.

The development raises concern over the status and welfare of Kenyans believed to be operating within foreign military structures, particularly amid ongoing global tensions and conflicts involving Russia.

Kenyan authorities have in recent months faced growing pressure to account for citizens reportedly recruited into foreign security operations under unclear circumstances. However, the absence of bilateral agreements appears to limit the government’s ability to intervene directly.

The Russian government’s stance effectively means that any Kenyan nationals serving in its military may not benefit from official repatriation efforts coordinated at the state level.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs is expected to continue monitoring the situation and may issue further guidance to Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad, especially in high-risk sectors.
