Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has called on the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning to urgently intervene following deadly clashes along the Kisumu–Kericho border near Muhoroni, where tensions over disputed land have erupted into violence.
In a formal communication to the national government, Governor Nyong’o appealed for immediate action to address the long-standing land dispute that has fueled unrest in the region. The clashes reportedly left one person dead and several properties destroyed, including vehicles that were set ablaze during the confrontation.
According to the governor, the violence stems largely from the lack of clear land demarcation along the border between the two counties, a situation that has created confusion among residents and heightened tensions between neighboring communities.
Nyong’o urged the Ministry of Lands to fast-track land surveys and beaconing in the contested area to establish clear boundaries and prevent further confrontations.
“The absence of proper land demarcation continues to fuel conflict among residents. The government must act swiftly to resolve the matter before more lives and property are lost,” the governor reportedly stated.
He further maintained that the disputed land had already been legally allocated by the National Land Commission (NLC) and that the allocation had been affirmed by the High Court of Kenya, emphasizing that the matter should not continue to trigger violent disputes.
Local authorities have also raised concerns that if the boundary issue remains unresolved, the area could witness more clashes as communities struggle over ownership and control of the land.
Security agencies have since been deployed in parts of Muhoroni and surrounding areas to monitor the situation and restore calm as investigations into the incident continue.
The latest incident highlights the persistent challenge of land-related disputes in Kenya, particularly in border areas where unclear demarcations often lead to tensions between neighboring communities.
Authorities are now under pressure to move quickly and provide a lasting solution to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
