Police in Juja have arrested more than 20 people following a raid on a suspected cult shrine allegedly linked to harmful practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM).
According to Juja Sub-County Police Commander Bernard Ngungu, the operation was conducted after authorities received intelligence reports pointing to suspicious activities taking place at the shrine.
Security officers moved swiftly to the location where they reportedly found several individuals believed to be involved in the activities. The suspects were arrested during the raid and taken into custody as investigations into the alleged practices continue.
Police say the shrine is suspected to have been used as a gathering point for cult-like operations where harmful and illegal practices may have been conducted away from public scrutiny.
Authorities have expressed concern that such activities could pose serious risks to vulnerable members of society, particularly women and young girls.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full scope of the activities that were taking place at the site,” said the police commander.
Law enforcement agencies have reiterated that FGM remains illegal in Kenya under national law and that anyone found participating in or facilitating the practice will face prosecution.
The government has in recent years intensified its crackdown on harmful cultural practices and illegal sects operating in secrecy across the country.
Residents of Juja have reacted with shock following the arrests, with some calling for thorough investigations to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Police have urged members of the public to report suspicious gatherings or activities that may threaten the safety and wellbeing of communities.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
Authorities say the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal groups and protect citizens from harmful practices.
