NAIROBI, Kenya — A suspected robber was fatally shot while two others were arrested during a late-night police operation in Githurai 44, following a violent robbery incident in Kasarani Sub-County.
According to police, the incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, at around 12:15 a.m. in the Budalangi area, after a member of the public was attacked and robbed.
Issa Mohamud said officers on patrol received a tip-off from members of the public about three suspects involved in the robbery. Acting swiftly, the officers launched a pursuit.
During the chase, one of the suspects was cornered in the Soweto area. Police reported that the suspect, armed with a knife, attempted to stab an officer—narrowly missing him but managing to slash his jacket. In response, officers opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.
The two remaining suspects were arrested shortly afterward and taken into custody. Police confirmed that the victim positively identified them as the individuals behind the robbery.
Authorities recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to the complainant, along with the knife allegedly used in the attack.
The body of the deceased suspect was moved to the City Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, as investigations into the incident continue.
The operation comes amid heightened concern over rising cases of violent crime in parts of Nairobi. Police say they have intensified patrols and crackdowns following complaints from residents who have reported increased attacks and robberies within estates.
In a separate incident highlighting growing insecurity, police in Murang’a are investigating the murder of 41-year-old Stephen Mwangi, whose decomposed body was discovered in Rwathika River days after he was reported missing.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by sharing information that can aid in curbing crime.
