First-Year KMTC Student Found Raped and Killed After Night Out in Karatina, Police Detain Last Person Seen With Her

Nyeri County — Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of a first-year Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student whose body was discovered under troubling circumstances after a night out in Karatina town.

The deceased, Sheila Chebet, a first-year student at KMTC Nyeri, was found dead in Rafina area, Karatina, on March 29, in a case that has shocked students, residents, and law-enforcement officers alike.

Police say the young woman had been out with a male university student on the night before her death. The man — now in police custody — was reportedly the last person seen with the deceased.

According to preliminary police reports, the suspect told investigators that the two had spent the evening drinking at a bar in Karatina town before leaving together later in the night.

He claims that after departing the bar, he escorted Sheila to a friend’s house in Rafina estate, where the pair allegedly developed a disagreement.

The suspect further told police that he later attempted to escort her to Karatina stage, but while walking there, three unidentified men allegedly approached them.

In his statement to detectives, the man claimed he fled the scene, leaving the young woman behind.

He further alleged that the men robbed him of his mobile phone, but he somehow remained in possession of Sheila’s mobile phone — a Redmi handset.

The phone belonging to the deceased was later recovered from him during his arrest, raising serious questions among investigators about the accuracy of his account.

Police have since detained the suspect as detectives piece together what truly happened during the final hours of the KMTC student’s life.

Meanwhile, the body of Sheila Chebet has been moved to the mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death as investigators pursue leads in the case.

Authorities say the motive behind the killing remains unclear, but detectives are treating the case as a serious crime and have vowed to pursue all individuals who may have been involved.
