Police in Kakamega County are investigating two separate but disturbing incidents that have left residents shaken—one involving a fatal family land dispute and another the discovery of a decomposed body in a sugarcane plantation.
In the first incident, a 51-year-old man, Solomon Masoni, was killed during a violent altercation with relatives over land use in Kovasali village, Kabras East Sub-County.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Masoni sustained serious injuries during the confrontation, with authorities noting a severe internal injury at the back of his head.
He was rushed to Malava Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers who visited the scene later moved the body to the Kakamega Orthopedic Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Two suspects have since been arrested and detained as detectives intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deadly land dispute.
Grim Discovery in Sugarcane Farm
In a separate incident, detectives in Kabras West Sub-County are probing the discovery of a woman’s body found in a sugarcane farm under disturbing conditions.
Police said the body, believed to be that of a woman aged around 30, was partly decomposed at the time it was discovered.
Authorities further revealed that the lower limbs of the body had been mauled, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The remains were moved to the Kakamega General Hospital Mortuary, where they await identification and a post-mortem examination.
The case has been recorded as a pending inquest, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kakamega North leading the probe.
Rising Tension Over Land and Security
The twin incidents have reignited concerns over land-related conflicts and security in Kakamega, with residents calling for urgent interventions to prevent further loss of life.
Land disputes remain one of the leading triggers of violence in parts of western Kenya, often escalating into deadly confrontations among family members.
Authorities have urged residents to resolve disputes through legal channels and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
