BUSIA, Kenya — An M-Pesa agent was shot and seriously injured before armed robbers made away with approximately Sh800,000 in a brazen attack in Busia County, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred at Mundika market on the outskirts of Busia, where the victim was reportedly ambushed by two armed assailants. Witnesses say the attackers opened fire, causing panic among traders and residents before fleeing with the cash.
According to reports, the suspects were armed with AK-47 rifles and escaped on a motorcycle shortly after the attack, raising concerns over the level of organization behind the crime.
Local leaders and residents have condemned the incident, terming it a reflection of worsening insecurity in the region. Some leaders questioned how such a violent robbery could occur in broad daylight, calling on security agencies to step up patrols and intelligence operations.
The victim was rushed to hospital as police launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled towards the Kenya–Uganda border using informal routes.
The attack has sparked outrage among business owners, particularly small-scale traders who rely on mobile money services, with many now demanding enhanced protection.
Authorities have urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to report to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
