A 78-year-old woman has been found dead inside her home in Lumakanda Ward, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, in what police are treating as a suspected night robbery that turned fatal.
The victim, identified as Beatrice Cleopah, was discovered on Thursday morning by her Grade Eight grandchild, who had gone to check on her after being unable to access the house through the door.
According to the family, the boy entered the house through a window and found it ransacked, with household items scattered across the room and some reportedly placed on top of his grandmother’s body.
Family members who spoke to West Kenya Television (WKT) said the incident has left them devastated, as they struggle to come to terms with the violent loss of their elderly relative.
Preliminary information indicates that unknown assailants may have broken into the home during the night in search of valuables. The motive and circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation.
Residents in Lumakanda and the wider Lugari area have raised alarm over increasing insecurity, particularly targeting vulnerable members of the community, including the elderly living alone.
Authorities have launched investigations and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
The body has since been moved to a local mortuary as investigations continue.
