MURANG’A, Kenya — Shock and grief have gripped residents of Ndakaini after the decomposed body of a 41-year-old man was discovered dumped in a river days after he was reported missing.
Police confirmed that the body of Stephen Mwangi was retrieved from Rwathika River, where it had been concealed following his killing. The discovery comes after Mwangi’s family reported him missing on March 4, 2026, sparking a search that has now ended in tragedy.
Authorities say the condition of the body indicates that it had been in the water for several days, raising suspicions of a calculated attempt to conceal the crime.
Detectives have since launched investigations into the murder, but the motive behind the killing remains unknown. Police have not ruled out foul play, and efforts are underway to trace the individuals responsible.
The body was moved to a local mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide further insight into the cause of death.
Residents have expressed fear and concern over the incident, calling for increased security and swift justice. The case adds to a growing list of unresolved killings in the region, intensifying pressure on authorities to crack down on crime.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
